The Problems of Being Overweight
By Eric Hartwell Some people will tell you that they like being over weight, that it suits them and they are happy. I am sure that they are, or think they are, but there are still problems with carrying too much excess weight. Every day we are told that obesity is on the increase in all age groups and that this increase is going to continue for the foreseeable future unless something drastic is done. But generally society is still very anti overweight people. Seating in theatres and cinemas are not always spacious enough, transport seating too small, cars not built to accommodate anyone too large and clothing stores still do not, on the whole, stock a full range of clothes in larger sizes. Magazines, films and TV show larger people as stupid or unattractive and thin ones as glamorous and elegant. If more and more of the population are going to be obese shouldn’t things that make every day living comfortable be more suited to those larger people? One problem with being over weight is obviously the issue of health related risks. Those who say “big is beautiful” are entitled to that view. However obesity increases the risks of heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, diabetes, joint problems and back injuries. These same people may say that this is their problem and its for them to decide what weight they are. But, in truth, this is not that simple. These increased health risks impact on all of us if a person is ill and cannot work, those of us that do work pay their benefits. Conditions such as coronary heart disease or diabetes are long term illnesses putting a strain on an already overstretched health service. You could say these illnesses were self-inflicted, although this is a little harsh, but there is only so much money in each health authority and money spent because of obesity can not be spent elsewhere. We need to look at the problem of why so many of us are over weight, including our children. We all lead busy lives and convenience foods help us make use of the little leisure time we have but we should think carefully about the adverse effects they could be having on our lives. The skills of cooking and planning healthy meals are being lost, we are becoming less and less aware of what we are actually eating, where it comes from and how it was prepared. The joy of eating is being lost in favour of simply satisfying hunger, or as a comfort in a time of need.
