The Taoist Art of Weight Loss

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Jamie Pierce How can a Taoist help you lose weight! What is this madness, how can a Taoist help me lose weight! I thought all Taoist’s live in a monastery on nuts and berries? You don’t want really expect me to live off nuts and berries, just so I can lose 20 pounds do you? STOP! No, I don’t suggest that you go and make such a drastic change to you nutritional habits, although many ‘health’ gurus out there do expect that sort of a change and they will throw every bit of Scientific Research at youthey can find to justify their new book or DVD. Today everything is put into two categories ‘Good’ and ‘Bad’. We have Good people, and we have Bad people, we have Good fats and we have Bad fats. Back in the days of the Taoist things were a lot more simple, the Taoist new that to lead a healthy and happy life he had to live in harmony with nature. So what does it mean to live in harmony with nature? Well before you say it, No you don’t have to sell your house and build a hut in the middle of some forest. Nature or Gaia has given us everything we need to live a healthy life, but we have forgotten how to listen to Gaia. Today Gaia’s richness has been replaced with the super sized Big Mac meal and the 3 Gallon diet coke for only a few cents extra! Well, forgive me if I am wrong but MSG and Aspartame are not natural products, hence they are totally against everything that Gaia stands for. The junk food industry’s against everything that the Taoist lives for, they do not teach people how to be responsible for what they consume, they do not make people aware of what people are consuming in their ‘Restaurants’. So what does a Taoist suggest to help me lose a few pounds? Well the key word here is simplicity, by simplicity I am mean Natural. Each time you eat something ask yourself this question, is what I am consuming Natural? One brief check of the ingredients and you can tell instantly if it is natural. Try this little experiment for a week and see how you feel, I would love to hear how you got on with this experiment, please feel to post a message on our forum. Keep your stimulants to a minimum (i.e. caffeine, that means those diet soda’s too)Consume about 70% Fresh fruits and Vegetables (Yes, you can juice them too)The other 30% should consists of about 20% Organic Meat, and 10% FatsRemember to drink pure mineral water; stay away from tap water (contains many bad chemicals!) If you’re looking for some more reading information, you can read my review of a very popular e-book on my website. I don’t agree with everything the author of this e-book says, but a lot of what he talks about is very practical. When You Sew, Do You Know How To Find Your Waist Line?

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Marian Lewis When you work on a sewing project, do you have trouble trying to find your waist line? Some waist lines are not as obvious as others. You think you know where it is, but you aren’t sure. You need to know this even for basic sewing. So many sewing instructions tell you to do this or that from your waist line. If you can’t find it, how can you follow the instructions? As women age, they get thicker in the middle and really have difficulty trying to figure out where their waist is. Another reason so many of you have this problem is because you don’t wear garments at your natural waist line, especially in the last few years with so many garments cut below the waist. There is a difference between where your natural waist line is and where you might wear your garments or be forced to wear your garments because of the ready-to-wear clothes available on the market today. Here are some tips to help you find your natural waist line. 1. Tie a narrow piece of elastic around your middle 2. Bend to the right side 3. Bend to the left side 4. Bend forward 5. Bend backward The elastic will roll to where your body bends. Voila! That is your natural waist line. It may not seem like the best place, but it is where your body naturally says it is. Garments will be more comfortable there. Don’t worry if your waist isn’t level. Mine is up in the front, down in the back, up on the right side and down on the left. Have you ever put on a pair of panty hose, hiked them way up trying to hold in your “blubber” and watched what happened? The minute that you bend, they will roll right to where your body bends and the “blubber” just spills out over the top. Place a 1″ waist band at that spot on your body. Bend in all directions. Wear it around the house for a while. It should settle at your natural waistline. When it feels comfortable, continue with the rest of your measurements. You really should use your natural waist line when you are fitting a master basic pattern. This is particularly true for pants and skirts. Then, once you have your fit, if you choose to wear your garments below the waist, just make a design change to a copy of your master basic pattern. Copy design changes from other sewing patterns or garments and learn how to apply them to your master basic pattern that you know fits you. Don’t start from scratch trying to fit another pattern. The rule is: Fit your natural body, then create your designs. It just makes sense! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= - by Marian Lewis 2006 Marian Lewis - All Rights Reserved 1st Step To Sewing Success =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Marian Lewis is a sewing instructor and the creator of an amazing new fitting method for hard-to-fit sewing folks. Specialized Scholarships for Aviation Maintenance

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Steve Bishop Aviation maintenance is a highly specialized field of work and requires a high degree of understanding, skills, and professionalism. In the last few years, the aviation industry has witnessed a decline in the number of people venturing into the field of aviation maintenance. Apart from this, the high levels of security risk in the aviation industry, especially after the events of September 11, 2001, have boosted concerns regarding the maintenance and day-to-day wear and tear of airplanes. In order to boost this dwindling profession, the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA) has launched a campaign to promote a higher degree of professionalism among aviation maintenance personnel. The association is aiming to develop and improve skills, methods, learning, and achievements in the aviation maintenance industry. PAMA has been conducting meeting and seminars at both the national and state levels, and striving to recognize achievements in this field. However, most importantly the association has been collaborating with other organizations in the aviation industry and has been actively addressing the queries of governmental agencies pertaining to maintenance rules and guidelines. In the recent years, PAMA has also established a Student Scholarship Program that recognizes and rewards qualified airframe, power plant, and avionics students who have selected aviation maintenance as a career. The awards that the association provides, may be used for tuition, fees, supplies, or books, which are related to their program The association also supports another scholarship program known as the Foundation Scholarship Program. Created to recognize and reward qualified students who have selected aviation maintenance as a career, the PAMA Foundation (PAMF) Scholarship Program awards $1,000 to the recipients. The association awards these scholarships regardless of the color, race, religion, and the national origin of the applicants. PAMAs programs operate based on donations received and from the funds raised at PAMA’s Annual Chili Cook-Off. Though the scholarships are not renewable, students have the option of reapplying for the scholarship every year. Apart from PAMA, the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) also provides scholarships for qualified students wishing to study further in the field of aviation maintenance. The UAAs Era Aviation, Inc. Scholarship offers two scholarships, each of $2,500. The aid is to help students who are admitted to an aviation maintenance technology program at the university with the cost of tuition, fees, and tools. While one scholarship is awarded to a helicopter maintenance student, the other is awarded to a general aviation maintenance student. Additionally, preference is given to candidates who are intending to follow a career in Alaska itself. While these two are the more prominent of the scholarships in this field, there are others as well, such as the Helicopter Association Internationals (HAI) Aviation Maintenance Technician Scholarship Award Program. This program aims at promoting the choice of helicopter maintenance as a career, and the scholarship is given to five recipients. Apart from this, the first place winner also receives about $1,500 from HAI to assist with the associated expenses. Overall, the field of aviation maintenance should pick up as such kind of scholarships add to the value of the field, and attract more students to enter the industry. While helping students along financially, these aviation maintenance scholarships are also giving rise to specific skill-based talent in the country. Los Angeles Pro Bono Lawyers

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Damian Sofsian Pro bono lawyers offer free legal services to people or charitable organizations. This free legal service is called as pro bono service. Many people are unable to appoint a good lawyer to represent their case as they lack the resources to pay the fees. However, many legal services and organizations offer legal aid to people who have limited means. There are several legal firms in Los Angeles that have Pro bono committees. Many established and experienced lawyers devote, a certain amount of their time to provide pro bono services. With the rise in the number of people trying to utilize pro bono services, many law firms have created programs, to appoint private lawyers who can afford to spare some of their time. These programs include training for lawyers to handle common forms of lawsuits. The American Bar Association (ABA) is on the forefront in improving their pro bono legal services. The ABA center is actively involved in creating various pro bono programs to offer optimum benefits to needy people. It also organizes a conference for bar leaders, pro bono program managers, and legal service staff every year to improvise the pro bono programs. State and local bar associations also facilitate in the designing and maintenance of pro bono programs. State court systems are always on the look out for lawyers, who are willing to impart their time and expertise to pro bono services. Many reputed law firms have a pro bono committee, consisting of lawyers and paralegals. Many non-profit organizations contact these law firms to seek advice in various legal issues. These firms provide invaluable assistance to resolve problems related to education, immigration, political issues, domestic matters, and criminal cases. They also tackle consumer grievances and financial issues. Some legal organizations in Los Angeles go beyond their legal domain while providing pro bono services and at times offer counseling as well. They donate funds, in large amounts to non-profit organizations that provide, medical assistance and other services to underprivileged children. How to Set Weight Loss Goal

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Zenith Regan It is the most crucial talk when you wish to lose weight. This is difficult because the success of your weight loss program depends upon how you have planed your goal. How much do you need to lose? This question is hard to answer and often based on your individual goals. If you’re losing weight for health, your goal might be more modest, say 5-10% of your current weight. But what if you have something more specific in mind like a certain clothing-size you want to fit into? How do you set a reasonable goal for yourself? The key to setting weight loss goals is to follow the standard of goal setting. It needs to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and tangible. Your first step is determining if you really need to lose weight. Set Your Goals When you are determined to lose weight, your next step is to set a reasonable weight loss goal for yourself. You can base your goals on any number of factors, but a great place to start would be the general recommendations set out by the American College of Sports Medicine which are 5-10% of body weight or one to two pounds per week. However, you can also use these calculators to set your goals: Ideal Body Weight Calculator How to Assess your Ideal Body Weight Height Weight Chart BMI Calculator Keep in mind that these calculations offer an approximate estimate. There are a number of factors that affect weight, so its best to take the results you get with a grain of salt. For example, BMI is affected by how much muscle you haveif you have more muscle, your weight might actually be higher than what is considered healthy on the BMI chart, even though you have a healthy body fat percentage. Make a Plan You have to determine your weight loss goals and should record that goal and then make a plan to reach it. Look at your goal objectively: is it specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and tangible? For example, assume a person is 5′7″ tall and weigh 160 pounds. According to the calculators above, the persons BMI is 25.1, which falls under the ‘overweight’ category. If he loses just 10 pounds, his BMI will be at a healthier 23.5. Goal Now the goal setting part. To lose 10 pounds in 12 weeks, you’ll need to cut the calories each day by 300-500 through both diet and exercise. To reach your goals break down your goal into specific steps. It will help you to focus on your daily tasks. Just remember to adjust your goal whenever you need to. If you find you’re not losing weight as quickly as you thought which is quite normal, change your goal weight or the length of time to reach it. Remember, your goal needs to be attainable, so be willing to set new goals if the old ones aren’t working for you. Be smart and plan your goals! Seeds of Change

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By E. Raymond Rock Over 4,000 different belief systems exist in the world, each with its proponents understandably claiming that people of faiths other than theirs are doomed. This is to be expected; otherwise, advocates would not feel secure within their beliefs three thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine beliefs must be wrong! Couple this with each organization encouraging their flock to proselytize, spread the word, and we can quickly recognize the seeds of conflict, seeds that have led to so many wars caused by deep-seated differences of beliefs or ideals, with millions of lives lost. Once we crystallize our beliefs, about whom we are and what or if God is, then all inquiry stops, and sectarian strife begins. Our eyes close. But there is another way to live, and that way is to live in harmony, together, where we can keep all our beliefs and twist as many arms as we like. But this way requires acceptance and surrender to the fact that not everybody will believe as we do (as hard as that is to swallow). We all continue our search inwardly for Truth, or God, or call it what you will, in our own ways, even if we think that we have found it. But we also intuitively know, that as human beings, we are not that Truth, because we are not lasting. We might be part of that Truth, or it might be a part of us, but our bodies change, grow old, and die, where our Truth surely doesnt our Truth is stable, eternal, loving, and compassionate. We are merely the result of conditions. Something had to happen . . . for us to happen. A sperm and an egg, karma, a pre-existing soul, whatever; we are the result of something. Yet our Truth is not. It had no beginning; it has no ending. It was not conditioned; there were no conditions present to make Truth happen. It was simply always there. Since we are a result of conditions, a result of something, unlike our Truth that is not a result of previous conditions; we are, by nature, vacillating and changeable. We are scattered about, here and there, and far away from that oneness of our Truth. Because we are not integrated, as our Truth is, we cant control the changes that endlessly occur, and we find ourselves trapped in that nasty middle management dilemma of having crushing perceived responsibility, with no authority! This is a certain recipe for stress, and stress is fact of life that cant be denied if we are truthful about our lifelong experience. If we did have a real self, wouldnt that self have some power over the changing landscape of our bodies and minds? The fact is; there is no self in control of anything, we just think there is. There is no self, other than the one we create in our minds, and how could such a creation as this have any chance to relate to that great Truth we aspire to? Our self is a result of conditions; we have created it, and therefore it is causal, conditioned, human, and not divine at all. It is only when we are able to see and understand this self, recognizing that it is not substantial and not worth our undying attention, that we can shift focus and really connect with that something greater. But its not the self that connects with Truth, or the self that has a relationship with Truth; it is Truth emerging in the absence of the self in other words, we are really this Truth we chase after. Isnt it ironic that this ineffable Truth has always been right here, within us, and all we had to do was get our self out of the way for a moment in order to see it! When we finally do see through this illusion of self and realize the attachment we have formed toward it, then our other attachments, all of them, even those connected to our views and opinions, are gladly sacrificed in deference to that higher power . . . that liberating Truth. As a matter of fact, we even give up our attachment to the one who is realizing all of this! Now, finally, we can experience authentic peace, a breath of fresh air, a tremendous relief. We have nothing left to lose at this point, with only the delights of life to engage us without the dreadful perceived burden of taking ownership and protecting them. Our opinions and beliefs become just opinions and beliefs thoughts not ideals to be defended to the death. We are no longer attached, no longer grasping and clinging, and life is more mature and joyful now, expanded and open in so many astonishing ways. At this new level of consciousness, we can see that causal things, like our bodies and minds, simply act in certain ways, and we can now understand and accept that. There is nobody getting anywhere; we are already here, and the Truth is not to be attained; it is already here as well. This point in our lives, where we recognize in our hearts that much of our stress is caused by things shifting about randomly, uncontrolled by any underlying self, is the exact point where we approach enlightenment, and where we are truly saved saved from ourselves. And although it will take only a handful of enlightened people to change the world, dont worry about that now; just change yourself! E. Raymond Rock is cofounder and principal teacher at the Southwest Florida Insight Center in Fort Myers Florida. His 28 years of meditation experience has taken him across four continents, including two stopovers in Thailand where he practiced in the remote northeast forests as an ordained Theravada Buddhist monk. Internet Dating Online

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Eddie Tobey Hooking up via the Internet is a common trend these days. People have eliminated the feeling of insecurity and fear of rejection by resorting to Internet dating, because they can contact possible prospects without really revealing too much about themselves and avoid embarrassment if it doesnt turns out to be a match. Online dating allows people to establish friendships without first passing judgment on the background of others. It somehow erases discrimination because it allows a person to inquire and question without being influenced by a face-to-face first impression. How many times have we been wrong about a person just because we dont like the way they dress or the way they talk? Online dating eliminates that discrimination because everybody is given a chance to explore and understand the unknown. Although many unlawful acts have been committed using online dating, there are websites out there that are truthful and sincere in their pursuit to be the best matchmaking site. There are also those sites whose main purpose is to expose matchmaking sites used for scamming people. They help the authentic sites get the respect they deserve and, at the same time, protect the people who really have faith in online Internet dating. Online dating is fun and effective, but constant vigilance has to be practiced whenever possible. Learn to guard your personal information and never divulge other sources for communication like your office email. Information like this should only be shared once you have established a friendship with the other person. Use your commonsense and trust your instinct — if you feel the other party is lying, they probably are, and when someone appears to good to be true, be wary. Grapefruit: Can It Really Help Us Lose Weight?

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Angie Mcilwaine New research in America has suggested that eating grapefruit, or drinking grapefruit juice before meals, helps people to lose weight and also helps to lower insulin levels in diabetes patients. A survey was recently conducted upon 100 overweight in California. One group ate half a grapefruit before each of their three meals a day. The second group drank a glass of grapefruit juice before each of their three meals. The third group were given placebo tablets, fruit juice and fruit capsules but did not consume any grapefruit or juice before their meals. After twelve weeks of following an otherwise identical diet, the first group who had eaten the grapefruit, had shed an average of 3.6 lbs per person, with some people losing up to 10lbs. The second group, who had drunk grapefruit juice before each meal had each lost an average of 3.3lbs, but the third group taking only capsules and fruit juice had only lost an average of 0.5lbs per person. Researchers suggest that the weight loss was linked to lower insulin levels in the grapefruit eaters, which in turn led to lower glucose levels. This is because insulin is used by the body, to metabolise sugar and when it is metabolised efficiently, it is less likely to be stored as fat. Lower insulin levels also cause people to feel less hungry. High levels of the hormone cause hunger and also stimulate the liver to manufacture fat, which can constrict arteries, leading to a risk of heart attacks and strokes. These findings are extremely interesting and could be of great benefit in helping to fight obesity, and also in the prevention and treatment of diabetes in the future. Does God Want You to Have A Smarter Brain Through Technology?

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Lance Winslow There is a great debate arising in the life sciences as scientists and researchers figure ways to increase your brainpower through technology. Using technologies and techniques in the Bio Sciences most scholars believe that soon they will find a way to safely integrate such technologies as NanoTech, BioTech, computer sciences, artificial intelligence and robotics to help humans become smarter and have add on memory. However there are many who are of religious faith who believe that this is evil and not part of gods plan? Of course a round Earth was also considered evil as well previously as well. Recently a member of a think tank from England stated in his debate against technology for brain enhancement stated: And about having a “smarter brain” by way of technological evolution, you do not seem to understand the nature of thought. Your thoughts do not come from physical particles! This comment was met with skepticism by another member of the think tank who felt that the UK member had not fully consider the pro-technology brain enhancement of the future and retorted: Dear Sir, please do not put words in my mouth. A smarter brain can be achieved by altering chemicals in the brain and modifying brain waves and combination of brain waves. Regarding the nature of thought: http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?s=22d7d9056bd61240bfb115018aa8aa06&showforum=15 Perhaps, I personally do not yet understand all there is to the flow of thought, but here is a start. Since you are much wiser than I, please state your entire viewpoint of what thought it is, exactly what it is. If you cannot state such, than it is unfair for you to judge my view of what thought is. So far you have indeed, told me what you think, I think thought is, but you are in error Dear Sir and therefore I question your other points in your comments as well. The debate was rather encompassing, but you can see the problematic conversational impasse between these think tankers and the hurdles, which will take in the future balancing technology with religious beliefs.
